The design of Rally cubes follows much of the same advice as the design of draft cubes though more attention is paid to the mana curve. In a given game of Rally, each player typically drafts between 15–30 cards before the game ends. Extrapolating these numbers out to support 4-player games would require 60–120 cards. Double those numbers to add some variation and you arrive at the recommend minimum: 200 total cards.
You typically want an approximate 2:1 ratio of card quantity between the low and high cube (players tend to draft more cards from the low cube due to reduced availability of mana in the midgame). A suggested mana curve across your cubes is shown below for a 200 card or a 500 card shell though your quantities may vary depending on personal preference and thematic choices.
| 200 card shell | 500 card shell | |
| Mana Value | Low cube (125) | Low cube (330) |
| 1 | 17 | 60 |
| 2 | 54 | 135 |
| 3 | 54 | 135 |
| High cube (75) | High cube (170) | |
| 4 | 40 | 100 |
| 5 | 23 | 45 |
| 6+ | 12 | 25 |
Colors
Because every player has an equal distribution of basic lands, it’s important that the colored mana requirement for your list be approximately equal in distribution as well. Each color should have:
- A handful of mana production options.
- A mix of low, medium, and high cost cards.
- A mix of permanents and spells.
Themes
Intentionally adding some specific strategies or synergies to your cubes can make your cube feel a little more personal and stylized. Similar to being passed a excellent card during draft that’s in your colors, flipping a card into the center array that synergizes with your deck feels great.
- EDHREC’s tags are a great resource for inspiration.
- CubeCobra is a great resource for cubes in general.
Example Rally Cubes
These lists were intentionally designed to reduce cognitive load while introducing the format to new players, so certain types of cards are absent from these lists (but feel free to add them to your own cubes!):
- No tokens other than treasure and powerstone tokens
- No double faced cards
